In tourism, communication with people from various countries and regions with international views is indispensable. The Faculty of Tourism¡¯s Global Program£¨GP£©aims to foster capable people with high communication skills, integrated sensitivity and understanding, and resourcefulness combined with critical thinking.

Global Program Completion Certificates are issued after fulfilling a chosen course of specialised subjects£¨GP subject£©and achieving the required level in the English Qualification Exam. Students can choose all their specialised subjects from GP, or choose a combination of classes from subjects taught in Japanese and GP subjects.

Features of the Global Program

Global Program£¨GP£©spans three basic courses: Tourism Management, Regional Revitalisation and Tourism & Culture. With all classes delivered in English, students broaden their global views and understanding, and strengthen their international communication capacity.

In addition to the short-term overseas study and student exchange programs, there are various choices such as volunteering and internships through cooperation with United Nations World Tourism Organisation£¨UNWTO£©, Pacific Asia Travel Association£¨PATA£©and Japan International Cooperation Agency£¨JICA£©. There is also a system of credit points issued for international activities based in Japan, and students are supported with opportunities to learn and practice English.

The Center for Tourism Research regularly offers special academic classes and seminars by international Visiting Researchers. This provides students direct contact with highly-diversified academics.

Global Program - structure

In order to gain fundamental English skills, we offer classes for skill development in listening, writing and reading. A support system for self-study covers freshmen to the latter term of sophomores.

All students can participate in the Global Program regardless of the course of their course selection: Tourism Management, Regional Revitalization or Tourism & Culture. There are four types of certification depending on the credit points achieved in the GP subjects, and the attained level of English certificate examinations£¨TOEIC/TOEFL£©. Completion of the GP certificate will be an advantage in applying for international exchange programs and future career choices. The number of classes offered in English enables international students to consider study at Wakayama University.

Curriculum Providing Studies in Japanese Culture

Developing the knowledge and ability to communicate the essence of Japan, including its traditional culture and arts.

We educate students to an advanced level of proficiency, fully appreciating and communicating the essence of Japanese culture and attaining competency in foreign languages. Classes are taught by experts in the traditional culture of Japan in fields such as the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, traditional arts and Kimono culture. With a particular focus via a number of perspectives including usage of honorific and polite Japanese as well as regional dialects, students are also put through a strict program on Japanese manners in order to study the correct way of using Japanese.

Excellent Internship and Practical Learning Opportunities

A program that provides all students with internship experiences domestically and overseas.

Internships in places such as tourism companies, industry administration and local government present important opportunities to create and develop a career. The Faculty of Tourism features a program by which each and every student is provided internship experiences domestically or overseas for short or mid to long terms. Targets for English education are also set for overseas internships.
