Center for Tourism Research (CTR), Wakayama University, holds online workshops for students and young researchers. This workshop will be held in a series of four sessions.

In the third session, Dr. Husna Zainal Abidin will introduce the potential of biometric techniques in behavioural research in the tourism and hospitality industry, including case studies, and discuss how these cutting-edge methods can provide deeper insights into research.

Session 3 “Using biometrics in tourism and hospitality research”

Overview

This workshop session aims to introduce postgraduate and early career researchers to the potential of biometric technology in studying behaviours in the tourism and hospitality industry. Participants will learn about various types of biometric measurements, such as eye-tracking and galvanic skin response and how they can be applied to gather real-time data on individuals' emotional and cognitive responses. The session will cover an introduction to the design and implementation of biometric research, challenges, and opportunities. Case studies will be used to demonstrate the application of biometrics within the tourism and hospitality sector, helping early-career researchers understand how such cutting-edge methods can provide deeper insights into their research.

Dr. Husna Zainal Abidin (Lecturer, Center for Tourism Research, Wakayama University, Japan)

Dr Husna Zainal Abidin is a Lecturer at the Center for Tourism Research, Wakayama University, Japan. Her research interests focus on the area of tourism management, eTourism, design thinking in tourism and hospitality, and Muslim travel. Not only does she research the technological influences and impacts in tourism, but she also integrates technological approaches into her research methods. As such, Dr Zainal Abidin is well experienced in using biometric devices in tourism research, with her most recent study looking into the influences of generative AI and tourist decision-making.
