Kumano Kodo & Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage sites: Tourism development and future challenges

Overview

This webinar aims to present the recent tourism development in Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and Kumano Kodo (Japan), and its current challenges in a post-COVID scenario. Pilgrimage has become a key tourism resource for local communities both in Spain and Japan to revitalize their economies and raise awareness about their own heritage. In this regard, Santiago de Compostela and Kumano Kodo are two prime examples of said development, having both been designated as UNESCO Heritage Sites and gathering the attention of domestic and overseas visitors. They have also become ‘sister pilgrimages’, collaborating in tourism promotion and cultural exchange between Japan and Spain. While both pilgrimages are well recognized, different challenges exist. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic influenced visitor numbers and travel patterns, bringing new challenges for local stakeholders.
Finally, at the end of the event, existing short programs for students enrolled in WU’s Faculty of Tourism will be mentioned to raise awareness about them.
