Relationships of Japanese Soldiers and Northern Thai People: Oral History-Based War Museum Development on Dark Tourism

This research seminar presents the collection of oral history interpreting relationships of the Japanese soldiers and northern Thai people along Japanese military routes in Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son during the period of World War II. Memorials and war museums of these routes have been developed as dark tourism attractions over more than two decades such as the Thai-Japan Friendship Memorial Hall, but they are less attractive due to a neglect of oral history presentation and its interpretation of historical consciousness. This research, therefore, discusses ideas of how to apply the concept of historical consciousness in developing war memorial museums through the commodification of oral history.
The seminar will also present learning activities of tourism students of Wakayama University visiting the memorial of Japanese Soldiers at Chiang Mai’s Ban Gad High School in February this year.
