Driving Sustainable Tourism through Data

The transition towards a more sustainable tourism sector is one that has relied heavily on consumers providing the initial catalyst or tourism business owners ‘doing the right thing’. However, while there are signs that some tourists can provide a motivation for travel and tourism companies to revise their products and there are altruistic owners of companies who act beyond the market imperative, the sector has adopted a simplistic approach to measuring the sustainability of travel and tourism. This presentation will give examples of a more data-driven approach to sustainable tourism that uses data drawn from the global and regional scale, as well as corporations. It will demonstrate that there are considerable gaps in what is not known about the sector, challenge conventional thinking about tourism and where it is considered to make a positive contribution, and identify examples of progress being made.
