Distinguished University Professor at Wakayama University and Sub-leader of CTR Tourism & Sports Unit, Dr. Gordon Walker (University of Alberta) has received the CALS Leisure Scholar Award 2018 from the Canadian Association for Leisure Studies.

According to the CALS, the Leisure Scholar Award recipient will have a distinguished record of scholarship, service, and mentorship as set out in the nomination guidelines. The individual has generated and/or influenced new concepts and ideas, provided new insights, advanced innovative perspectives and approaches to research, and ultimately, had a significant impact on the way in which leisure is understood and plays out in the lives of Canadians.
As one of his nominators expressed
… [Dr. Walker’s] research on demonstrating the ways in which core social psychological constructs such as self-determination theory, intrinsic motivation, and social connections have shed light on underlying processes associated with our leisure experiences. Importantly, he has bridged this work with his cross-cultural work and shown how the relationships among these social-psychological constructs and experiences vary across cultures. His work in this area is particularly influential and provided a strong conceptual foundation for the many researchers and students who are emulating his work.
